- The best of Oaxaca's archaeology, culture and history - Featuring the archaeological sites of Mitla, Yagul, San Jose Mogote, Zaachila, and, of course, Monte Alban! Plus visits to the picturesque villages of Teotitlan del Valle and Cuajimoloyas, a day tour of the Spanish Colonial jewel of Oaxaca will including a visit to the Cathedral and the Church of Santo Domingo, the City Culture Museum, the Market and the Rufino Tamayo Museum, the colorful market days in Etla and Zaachila and the Convent of Santiago in Cuilapam.
This 8 day / 7 night tour explores the ancient civilizations and legacy of ancient, colonial and native Mexico. The tour includes ruins and remnants of the Zapotec and Mixtecs cultures plus the UNESCO World Heritage site of OAXACA. Begins and ends in Oaxaca Mexico. Tour begins the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month, year round.
DAY 1 SAT. ARRIVAL TO OAXACA, Mexico. Meet at Oaxaca International Airport and transfer to hotel Oaxaca City for overnight.
DAY 2 SUN. MITLA – YAGUL – TEOTITLAN DEL VALLE One hour scenic drive to the South East of Oaxaca City is located Mitla Archaeological Site, a Zapotec city that reached its peak in the 14th Century. Famous for the fretwork with unique decorative greca facades. Nearby Yagul Archaeological Site will also be visited, and it shares with Mitla some of its interesting architectural style, believed to come from the interacting of Zapotecs and Mixtecs. En route back to Oaxaca City, visit to the picturesque town of Teotitlan del Valle. Lunch stop will be in a typical hacienda. Overnight in Oaxaca City. (B,L) DAY 3 MON. SIERRA NORTE The Northern Sierra is a scenic area with beautiful forest mountains and several picturesque villages among them, Cuajimoloyas that will be visited. Lunch in a community restaurant is included. Overnight in Oaxaca City. (B,L) DAY 4 TUE. OAXACA CITY TOUR A day in this Spanish Colonial jewel includes visiting the Cathedral and the Church of Santo Domingo, the City Culture Museum, the Market and the Rufino Tamayo Museum. Oaxaca is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Overnight in Oaxaca City. (B,L) DAY 5 WED. ETLA – SAN JOSE MOGOTE Today is Market Day in Etla and it is very colorful. Etla is only 10 miles from Oaxaca City and located 2 miles beyond the San Jose Mogote Archaeological Site, with origins dating 1500 BC making it the oldest city in the Oaxaca Valley, will be visited en route back. The site consists of 8 mounds with only one of them extensively investigated. Visiting the community museum is planned, although unfortunately is not always open. Overnight in Oaxaca City. (B,L)
DAY 6 THU. ZAACHILA – CUILAPAM DE GUERRERO Just 10 miles to the south of Oaxaca City is Zaachila Archaeological Site, that during some time in the 14th and 15th Centuries was the Capital of the Zapotec People. It is near the town of Zaachila. Our visit will be on their market day or “tianguis”. Lunch will be at the La Capilla Restaurant on a hill that overlooks the valley. On the way back, the Covent of Santiago in Cuilapam is a must stop place. Overnight in Oaxaca City. (B,L)
DAY 7 FRI. MONTE ALBAN Monte Alban definitely ranks among Mesoamerica's most important archaeological sites. Its location by itself is impressive enough. This great city atop the hill, reigned for at least 12 centuries, between 500 BC to 750AD. Monte Alban is an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Farewell Dinner with Guelaguetza Folk Dance Show. (B,L,D) DAY 8 SAT. DEPARTURE FROM OAXACA Transfer to Oaxaca International Airport.

PLEASE NOTE - The Mayan Traveler tours are not "day tours" or "seat in bus" tours. Our tours (other than Guaranteed Departure tours) are quality, escorted tours designed for a minimum of 4 persons. We can accommodate smaller groups but the prices quoted on this site will not apply. For example, if 2 two persons wish to travel we can accommodate but the total charge for the tour will be 1 1/2 times the published price, per person. In other words, two persons can travel on their own tour but the charge will be as if three were traveling. In that case the 4 person minimum requirement does not apply. ALSO, our tours generally begin on the 1st through the 8th of each month. Large groups or customized tours can begin any day.
