EXTRA SPECIAL- Pre and Post Tours for the Best of the Maya

Best of the Maya Pre-Tour

 A tour of the Mayan Sites of the Yucatan, including - Cancun - Valladolid - Chichén Itza - Merida – Dzibilchaltún - Uxmal - Kabah – Labná – Campeche – Edzna.

This special 5 day/4 night cultural experience tour will take us to some of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Yucatan: Uxmal, Chichén Itzá, and Kabah. Our learning adventure will also be a journey through time – from modern Yucatan to the cradle of Mayan civilization. You will explore the peninsula's most spectacular Mayan ceremonial centers and diverse ecosystems while experiencing the ancient civilization and legacy of the Mayan’s Yucatan culture. 

A physically active program; light hiking, 2-4 hours per day on undulating trails; climbing old, uneven steps at some ruins.

This tour begins in Cancun (CUN) and ends in Villahermosa with the beginning of the Best of the Maya tour.

 Pre-Tour dates - January 10/14,  February 7/11, March 7/11, April 11/15, May 9/13 and June 6/10.

Day 1 - Tuesday - Arrive in Cancun and depart for Valladolid. You will be transferred to your hotel in Valladolid.  There will be an evening orientation in the gardens of the hotel where your tour guide will give a short briefing about the excursion routine. Afterwards, a welcome dinner at the hotel. (D)

Day 2 - Wednesday - Chichén Itzá, Merida - After breakfast the tour will head west to the archaeological ceremonial center of Chichén Itzá.  The tour arrives early in the morning at Chichén Itzá to explore the majestic legacy of the ancient Mayans. The tour will explore the nine-level El Castillo, the impressive ball court (the largest in Mundo Maya), the Toltec style court of the thousand columns and the Temple of the Warrior, the sacrificial well, the Sacred Cenote, and visit the Observatory. Lunch will be provided en route, then the tour continues to the beautiful Colonial City of Merida for a late afternoon arrival. Dinner will be provided at your hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 3 – Thursday - Merida, Uxmal – Today you will enjoy touring the parks, avenues, Spanish missions and colonial architecture of the glorious city of Merida plus the beautiful Anthropology Museum. After lunch you will stop for a brief visit to the interesting Mayan site of Dzibilchaltún.  Then it’s an early afternoon departure for your accommodations at Uxmal. After dinner, you will marvel at the Light and Sound Spectacle at the Uxmal Ceremonial Center. (B, L, D)

Day 4 - Friday - Uxmal, Kabah, Labná, Campeche – Today you will tour Uxmal’s Temple of the Magician, Quadrangle of the Nuns, Governor’s Palace and the stunning carved stones of the House of Doves. After lunch you will drive through the scenic countryside and visit the sites of Kabah and Labná. After this array of ancient archaeology you will continue to the colonial city of Campeche for dinner and lodging at the hotel. (B, L, D)

Day 5 – Saturday - Campeche, Edzna, Villahermosa - After breakfast you will check out of the hotel and take a city tour at Campeche before traveling to the archaeological site of Edzna.  The two most impressive structures at Edzna are the main temple which is built on a platform 40 meters high providing a wide overview of the surroundings and the ball court.  Lunch will be served en route as you continue to Villahermosa for dinner and overnight accommodations.  In the evening you will have the opportunity to meet the others who will be making up your Best of the Maya tour.  (B, L, D)

Best of the Maya Post-Tour

 A delightful 5 day / 4 night tour of the Ancient, Colonial, Traditional and Living Maya Guatemala featuring the Guatemalan Highlands and its colorful markets, colonial cities and beautiful landscapes and natural beauty.

 Post-Tour dates - January 21/25, February 18/22, March 18/22, April 22/26, May 20/24 and June 17/21.

Day 1 - Saturday - On BOM´s  last day you will be transferred to Guatemala City.  After your transfer to  Guatemala City you will visit the Guatemala National Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology.   Overnight in Guatemala City.

Day 2 - Sunday - Chichicastenango, Lake Atitlan - Today you will depart early to Chichicastenango, by far the largest and most colorful handicrafts market in the Americas.  Every Thursday and Sunday, Maya people from all over Guatemala meet to sell their products and visit the town’s Catholic Church, Santo Tomas, to pray in their own way becoming the best example of syncretism of the Maya and Catholic traditions.  Then you will transfer to Lake Atitlan for overnight in Panajachel.

Day 3 - Monday - Lake Atitlan, Iximche, Antigua - An interesting geological formation, Atitlan is a lake of volcanic origin, located at 5,000 feet above sea level and surrounded by 3 imposing volcanoes and in the heart of the Living Maya culture.  You will take a boat tour to visit Santiago Atitlan, a town famous for naïf paintings and wood carvings. After lunch you will transfer to Antigua, visiting en route the interesting Mayan archaeological site of Iximche, for overnight. 

Day 4 - Tuesday - Antigua - Antigua is an UNESCO World Heritage Site due to the incredibly preserved Spanish Colonial heritage.  Founded in 1542, it was for over 200 years the Capital of Central America.  You will have a morning tour to its most important palaces, plazas, churches and convents.  You will then have a free afternoon to explore on your own. Overnight in Antigua.

Day 5 - Wednesday - Departure from Guatemala City (GUA) - Today you will be transferred to Guatemala City airport for your international departure.  (B)

This tour begins in Copan Honduras with the end of the Best of the Maya tour and ends in Guatemala City (GUA).

*An optional tour of the Guadalupe Shrine and Teotihuacán is available with this tour.  You would need to come in one day before the start of the selected tour.   You will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel for the evening.  The next day you will visit the Square of the Three Cultures, where the past and the present mix, the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Patroness of America; the impressive archaeological zone of Teotihuacán to admire the monumental Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, the temple of  Quetzalpapalotl, the Citadel and the Avenue of the Dead. You will also visit an arts and crafts center tour before being returned to you hotel for the first night of your selected tour.  The cost is $100 to $150 per person, depending on the category of your selected accommodations.
