 Birdwatching at Chaa Creek

Chaa Creek's 365 acres are always abuzz with the sounds of a tropical forest concerto. A fly-past of squadrons of brilliantly colored parrots, the distance of a Blue-crowned Mot-Mot and the fragrance of frangipani blossoms welcomes you to a new world steeped in Mayan history, and surrounded by nature's bounty.  But, during the nesting months of April and May, avian activity heats up, as more than 308 species of raucous birds compete for space with the new blooms of multihued flora to begin the fascinating task of building their nests within the reserve.

This lively time of the year offers both the expert and casual bird watcher, an exciting opportunity to view toucans, trogons, humming birds, parrots and numerous other baby fledglings as they hatch from their eggs to become the newest residents of the Belizean rainforests.

During these nesting months, Chaa Creek will be offering a five-night/six-day Birding Expedition Package.

The guided expedition consists of five nights accommodation at the award winning Lodge at Chaa Creek, airport transfers, all meals and on-site activities, as well as: an early morning birdwatching expedition to Laguna Aguacate, a full day birding excursion to the Mountain Pine Ridge, a full day birding and archaeological tours of the ancient Maya temple cities of Caracol and Tikal, a birding tour of the ancient Maya agricultural centre of El Pilar, and a birding canoe trip on the Macal River.

MOPAN  RIVER  RESORT

Mopan River Resort is 90 acres of private reserve in a setting of incredible beauty and tranquility, snuggled at the foothills of the Maya Mountains with the Mopan River at our doorstep. The twelve luxurious, air conditioned cabañas and suites of Mopan River Resort has beautiful Belizean hardwood interiors.  A finely thatched roof provides an exotic, tropical ambience. The result is comfort and elegance with a touch of adventure. Cabañas are equipped with either one queen bed, or twin beds; and suites have one queen bed. Each cabaña and suite has a private bath, with a double basin vanity, and a separate toilet/tub compartment. Our efficient water heaters provide plenty of hot water at the sink, as well as the bath.

They are the closest resort, without leaving Belize, to the ancient Maya ruins of Tikal in Guatemala . The resort is situated on 10 acres of lush gardens amongst the existing mature grove of coconut, avocado, mango, citrus and cedar tree and surrounded by 80 acres of incredible natural jungle habitat. With well over 200 species of unusual and distinct birds in constant song; an explosion of color and tranquil sound - you are in paradise! We believe that you will find Mopan River Resort is one of the most beautiful, and comfortable properties in Belize.

Some of the many birds you will see here are herons, kingfishers, toucans, parrots, jays, warblers and hummingbirds. Wildlife visitor often spot are the kinkajoo, gray fox, and agouti, to name a few. A 20 ft. high bird watching tower, near the pool, is also a great vantage point for spotting exotic tropical birds in the surrounding jungle in addition to enjoying the panoramic view.

Our all-inclusive program appeals as much to the independent traveler as to those accustomed to package tours. Because of the maximum capacity of 25 guests, the resort's excursion groups are always small, with no more than 10-12 people.

The following outlines the adventure options for each package:

 Full Day Tours

·          "River of Caves" Cave Tubing - This tour is usually not available from Feb-June

·          River Cave Expedition - Cave Tubing

·          Waterfall Cave Expedition - This expedition has a very high difficulty level and all participants must be fit and agile.  Subject to high water levels during the rainy season.

·          Mayan Ceremonial Cave Tour - If you are not up to long hikes or strenuous activities, then we do not recommend this activity to you. Once at the site of the cave entrance, you must be somewhat agile in order to enter the cave. All participants must be relatively fit.

·          The Black Hole Drop - SPECTACULAR, INCREDIBLE, A RUSH LIKE NO OTHER !!!  Jungle hiking, rappelling through the jungle canopy and down the Actun Loch Tunich sink hole, a return hike out of the foothills and a well deserved cold beer at camp. This expedition is not for the faint of heart and all participants must be relatively fit.

·          Actun Tunichil Muknal (ATM) Cave Tour - This cave is one of the most popular Mayan burial sites in Western Belize. The cave contains four skeletons, ceramics, and stoneware left by the Maya.  The most famous skeleton inside the cave is that of a young girl, the bones of which have been completely covered by the natural processes of the cave, leaving them with a sparkling appearance. This adventure is challenging and a good level of physical fitness is required. The ability to swim is a plus as you must cross water at three different points.

·          River of Caves Tube Float and zip line combo adventure.

·          Jungle Tours and Treks - One full day in the pristine jungle with local bushmen guides.

·          Lost Mayan Ruins Expedition - With local bushmen as your guides, search for the lost Mayan ruins located around the 58,000 acre Caves Branch estate. Walk across unexcavated ceremonial plazas, and stand on the palaces and temples of ancient kings and priests amidst the eerie sounds of the jungle.

·          Xunantunich and Cahal Pech Maya Ruins - This guided day trip with experts on Maya takes you from the Caves Branch Estate to two of the major Mayan sites in Belize.

·          Snorkeling Day Trips - Departing Caves Branch at 6:45 am for an incredible drive through the foothills of the Maya Mountains, arriving in the beach village of Hopkins by 8 am. One of our dive boats will take you to South Water Caye where your snorkel guide will meet you. Then on to the Barrier Reef for a two stop snorkeling day then later stopping at one of the research stations along the reef for a familiarization tour of the stations. Returning to the mainland beach just after mid day. Spend the rest of the afternoon on the white sand beaches of Hopkins.

·          Diving The Barrier Reef - Following the same travel and time itinerary of the snorkeling trip above, you are taken from Hopkins Village directly to the Great Barrier Reef for 2 1-tank dives at different dive locations along the reef. ·          Belize Zoo and Baboon Sanctuary - This day trip takes you in and around Belize City for some close encounters of the animal kind.
